La Fogata Mexican Bar & Grill was started by Javier Leon, an immigrant from Mexico and his wife Vivian. He started La Fogata in 1980 when he realized that Walnut Creek did not have any Mexican restaurants to eat. Originally, La Fogata was Arthur's Deli, which Javier purchased from Arthur. For a few years, Javier continued to run Arthur's Deli before he made the transition over to the Mexican restaurant, La Fogata. What many people do not know and still do not know today is that the recipes from La Fogata were not his. The recipes he started with were from a man named Raul, who owned El Chichen in Oakland, CA where Javier regularly visited. Over the years, the recipes have changed and they've tried new ones but the original ones were from Raul of El Chichen. La Fogata still has the same two day cooks that have prepared the meats, sauces, and other foods since the 1990s, Chal and Teresa. If you've gone into La Fogata during the day before then you would surely know their faces. La Fogata is still owned and operated by the Leon family but is currently closed due to COVID-19. La Fogata is known for their chips and salsa that is served with every meal. If I were in Walnut Creek, I would definitely visit La Fogata to grab a margarita, eat some chips and salsa and throw down some tacos!
La Fogata Mexican Bar & Grill is located on the corner of Mt. Diablo and N. Main St. next to Rooftop WC and Vineyard Vines in Downtown Walnut Creek.
